Everything to Know About Lobe Piercings

Marking the beginning of most piercing journeys, the ear lobe always holds a special place in our hearts. The most iconic and timeless of all the piercings, the lobe gives endless ability to play with personal style. From a single lobe piercing to multiple piercings, the lobe can be decorated in any style that suits you.

Whether you’re getting your first piercing or adding new additions to your stack, it’s always a good idea to be informed. In this guide, we’ll be sharing everything there is to know about lobe piercings - from what a lobe piercing is to how to care for it, and everything else you may be wondering! We’ll also round up six of our favorite designs for the lobe from our collection.

Ready to learn about lobe piercings and get some serious piercing inspo? Let’s dive in!

What is an earlobe piercing?

Undoubtedly the most popular of all piercings, earlobe piercings are placed on the soft, lower part of the ear. Done by either a machine or a needle, an earlobe piercing gives you seemingly infinite styling options from studs to hoops. Some people choose to stop at just one lobe piercing, but if you’re anything like us, you may opt for multiple lobe piercings for an elevated jewelry stack.

Types of Lobe Piercings

So, what are the different variations of earlobe piercings? Let’s take a look.

  • Standard Lobe Piercing

The most common of all the lobe piercings, and usually the first piercing someone gets, a standard lobe piercing refers to one hole near the bottom of the lobe. The piercing is often done symmetrically with one hole in each ear.

  • Double Lobe Piercing

Adding a bit more flair to the look, double lobe piercings are exactly what they sound like - two holes in the ear instead of just one.

  • Triple Lobe Piercing

Allowing for even more creativity when it comes to styling, a triple lobe piercing refers to three holes in the ear. This can be done symmetrically on each ear or just one of the ears.

  • Upper Lobe Piercing

Sitting closer to the fold of the ear, an upper lobe piercing creates a unique placement for studs or hoops.

  • Transverse Lobe Piercing

Piercing horizontally through the width of the lobe, rather than the traditional vertical placement, a transverse lobe piercing is a visually interesting addition to the ear.

  • Orbital Lobe Piercing

Creating a circular look, an orbital lobe piercing is done by placing one earring in two holes. This is usually done with a hoop or a barbell.

  • Constellation Lobe Piercing

Featuring multiple piercings all over the earlobe, the constellation lobe piercing is aptly named. Combining studs, hoops, and dangly earrings, it’s a fun way to show off all your favorite jewels.

  • Stacked Lobe Piercing

Vertically stacking one piercing on top of the other, the stacked lobe piercing is a beautiful and dynamic way to present your earrings.

Do Lobe Piercings Hurt?

On the scale of piercing pain, lobe piercings fall on the lower end of the spectrum. With a rating of about two out of ten, lobe piercings are pretty mild. As this part of the ear is softer than the cartilage or other areas, it results in a more manageable experience with less pressure and pain.

Before any piercing, we recommend eating a balanced meal and drinking plenty of water to prepare your body for a positive experience. We also suggest practicing mindful breathing to ease any anxiety you may be feeling.

The Healing Process for Lobe Piercings

Lobe piercings take about six weeks to heal fully. In the initial healing stages of the piercing, you can expect a bit of discomfort, mild swelling, and redness. After a couple of weeks, these symptoms should start to go away. While healing, follow a proper aftercare routine to ensure a speedy recovery.

Aftercare for Ear Lobe Piercings

For a quick and easy recovery, you’ll want to take good care of your new lobe piercings. Follow the steps below and you’ll be healed in no time!

  • Clean your new piercings using a saline solution and gauze twice daily for the first few weeks. Gently wipe around the piercings to remove any discharge.
  • Once your ears are cleaned, carefully dab them dry with clean gauze. Keeping your new piercing dry is an important part of the healing process!
  • Avoid touching your piercings. If you do need to touch them, such as for cleaning, be sure to scrub your hands clean first.
  • Do not twist, turn, or wiggle the earrings.
  • Stay out of pools, oceans, or other bodies of water for the first month or so to avoid infection.
  • Do your best to not sleep on your piercing. If you can’t fall asleep on your back, try a piercing pillow or travel pillow to avoid putting pressure on the new earrings.
  • Wait until your piercing is fully healed before changing the earring out.

The Switch From Studs to Hoops

You should wait one to two months before changing your stud earring for a hoop - or any other new earring. Make sure the piercing is fully healed before making the switch to prevent any infections, problems, or discomfort. When you are ready, be sure to purchase high-quality earrings made of real gold, silver, or titanium. If you’re looking for the perfect earrings, we, at John Boy, offer a range of stunning designs made with the highest attention to quality and aesthetics.
